The scheme for the new Rinascente store in Palermo follows a decisive yet delicate design. Decisive because it does not relinquish the proposal of contemporary architecture, clutching at straws with anti-historic devices; delicate because it has to consider the need to relate to what was already there, respecting however its diversity. The keystone in this equilibrium was found in the decision to conserve traces of the appearance of the existing building via the superimposition of an opalescent façade that allows the structure to transpire and be perceived. The skin of the building “glacial” and reflective, is a surface architectural mark. With the new intervention, the old remains visible, is absorbed by the new, becomes part of it. At night, the building becomes a luminous and opalescent lantern.
L'intervento per la nuova sede della Rinascente a Palermo è l'esito di un progetto deciso e delicato allo stesso tempo. Deciso, perchè non rinuncia a proporre architettura contemporanea arrampicandosi sugli specchi di espedienti anti-storici; delicato perché deve considerare la necessità di rapportarsi con ciò che già c'era, rispettandolo però nella sua diversità. La chiave di volta di questo equilibrio, è stata trovata nella scelta di conservare le tracce estetiche dell'edificio preesistente, attraverso la sovrapposizione di una facciata opalescente che ne fa trasparire e intuire la struttura. La pelle dell'edificio, "glaciale" e riflettente, è un segno architettonico di superficie. Superato dal nuovo intervento, il vecchio rimane visibile, fa corpo con il nuovo, ne diventa elemento. Nella notte, il palazzo diventa una lanterna luminosa e opalescente.
